DYC announced the launch of the Junior Choirs in 2018. DYC is working to create a fully incremental structure of choral music education in Dublin. Junior Choir began rehearsing in September 2018, and more singers joined in September 2019. Singers in Junior Choir begin their DYC experience as they enter Second Class. It is a four-year programme, after which singers are invited to audition for Training Choir. Junior Choir is conducted by Lynsey Callaghan and accompanied by David Callaghan.
?Training Choir began in September 2019. 30 singers aged 10-14 were chosen to take part in Dublin Youth Training Choir’s new initiative. In addition to singing in Training Choir, the young singers receive musicianship training through a Kodály-inspired programme. This choir is conducted by Lynsey Callaghan and Jennifer McMahon and accompanied by David Callaghan.
Based in the heart of Dublin’s city centre, Dublin Youth Choir was founded in 2017 with the aim of providing a structure of incremental choral music education for the young singers of Dublin. DYC strives to provide the opportunity to develop musicianship, ensemble-singing skills, and sound vocal technique for every young singer. Under the artistic direction of Lynsey Callaghan, accomplished musicians and teachers volunteer their time and expertise on a weekly basis to work with the young singers. DYC consists of seven choirs: Junior Choir (for primary school children from Second Class), Training Choir (ages 10-14), Youth Choir (ages 14-18), Chamber Choir (ages 14-20), DYC Singers (ages 18-28), Male Voice Choir, and Cross Border Youth Choir (with the Belfast Philharmonic Youth Chamber Choir). DYC began the Voices for Change initiative in 2018 and has partnered with Down Syndrome Ireland and Trócaire to raise funds for these charities. In 2020, DYC announced the appointment of Laura Sheils as Emerging Composer-in-Residence. In this position, Laura will write new works for a number of DYC choirs. Her residency will be documented by the participants on the DYC Music Reporters scheme.
