Dublin Youth Choir began in January 2017 with the launch of the Chamber Choir; 24 young singers were chosen to perform challenging repertoire and to develop their musicianship under the mentorship of DYC's Artistic Director, Lynsey Callaghan. The choir won Best Youth Choir in the RTÉ Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas 2017, 2018 and 2019 competitions and the Prize for Best Performance of a Contemporary Irish Choral Work. They also won the Dublin County Choir Award for Youth Choirs at Feis Ceoil 2019 and the Oliver O’Brien Award, the overall award for all choirs in the competition. Dublin Youth Chamber Choir won the Youth Choir competition at the Cork International Choral Festival 2019. As Cross Border Youth Choir, along with the Belfast Philharmonic Chamber Choir, they won the Youth Choir competition at the Derry International Choral Festival 2018.
In August 2019, Dublin Youth Chamber Choir was named Champions of the European Choir Games in the Youth Choir category and was awarded two gold medals, including one for the international Grand Prix, and a gold diploma. Dublin Youth Choir was the only Irish choir out of 171 choirs and 6300 participants from 47 nations. Following this, they were invited by President Higgins to perform at Áras an Uachtaráin twice.
DYC Singers began rehearsing in September 2019. This choir comprises singers aged 18-28 and is the oldest choir within the larger structure of choral music education, Dublin Youth Choir. While many members of DYC Singers have previously sung with Dublin Youth Choir and Dublin Youth Chamber Choir, the choir has also welcomed many new singers into the DYC family. DYC offers professional development opportunities for its singers, making DYC Singers a valuable experience for merging professional musicians, music teachers, and music students, as well as enthusiastic and committed choral singers with careers in other fields.
Lynsey Callaghan is Founder and Artistic Director of Dublin Youth Choir and Artistic Director of Belfast Philharmonic Youth and Chamber Choirs. She regularly works as chorusmaster for Chamber Choir Ireland. She is undertaking a PhD in medieval musicology in Trinity College Dublin.
